Really Simple Syndication

By leebill at 2009-12-09 05:27:14
RSS is by definition -- an acronym for "Really Simple Syndication" or "Rich Site Summary", and the .XML extension is the format used for distributing YOUR news headlines via the Web, which is known as "Syndication"."Syndication" is where the TRUE power of RSS is unleashed, getting your message or information across the web in an INSTANT to websites, your subscribers and/or readers.

The term RSS is short for Really Simple Syndication. Before RSS feeds were available, in order to keep up with certain web sites a person had to book mark the web site and check in every other day or so to see if anything had been changed. If someone has several web sites that they want to keep tabs on, it is easily confusing and some web sites could be overlooked when checking others. And for those sites that don't get updated regularly, it's a waste of time to check them. RSS feeds took those hassles away by sending updated content to various feed readers or to people's email inbox. This way, if someone has several web sites they're interested in, the information is sent to them directly, rather than having to hunt it down themselves.

Web site content that uses RSS include blogs, news headlines, video and audio clips. In order to view an RSS feed the user will need a feed reader. Such readers include MyYahoo, Google Reader, an Bloglines. Some computer programs such as Windows, Windows Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird include feed readers as part of their program. If a person finds a blog or a news site that the want to keep up to date on, they need to locate how to subscribe to the feed. This can be found two ways, either on the site itself, or in the web browser.

RSS is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication and also sometimes Rich Site Summary. The word syndication indicates that the content, which may be in form of blogs, articles, news headlines, audio or videos, is submitted to several recipients in form of web feed formats. An RSS document is, in fact, called a feed or a web feed. It is like article syndication where the same article is submitted to several article directories for publication.

An RSS is a means of publicizing updates about websites. It may or may not include a summary and photos of the latest posting. But those that provide summaries (thus Rich Site Summary) allow users to skim through the article so that they could decide later on if they want to access the website source. The RSS feed usually contains the title of the update originating from the website. It is also usually the link to the website source.

There never seems to be an end to new marketing buzz words on the internet. You most likely have heard of RSS feed. Chances are though you are so caught up with other avenues of marketing that you haven't given much thought to this venue as yet. It would be worth putting on your "to do" list though as it has some great potential.

To use Really Simple Syndication , you must to have an Really Simple Syndication feed from your website. Wordpress provides one of the easiest ways to construct an Really Simple Syndication feed as it is a fundamental part of the program. A static HTML site can be translated into an RSS feed, though it isn't always simple. This frequently involves a manual process and manual submission of files. You can find websites which will do this conversion automatically.

One way to submit an RSS feed for your website is to put up a blog or "weB LOG" Blogging software usually contains built in code that will submit your feed to RSS directories every time you make a new post. For some people, however, this can be tricky. Blogging software out of the box can be a little intimidating, and they usually provide very little to no documentation. Hosted blogs like WordPress and Blogger usually contain those built in codes, but customizing your blog to your liking can be difficult.

How to use RSS

Using RSS feeds is easy. You just have to add several lines of code on your web page or blog and your content will automatically be updated.

Usually you need a feed reader or news aggregator software to gain RSS feeds from different websites and display them on your own web pages. Feed readers come in a variety of platforms but there are also the web-based feed readers such as My Yahoo, Bloglines and Google Reader.

After obtaining your feed reader, the next step is to find sites that syndicate content and add the RSS feed to the list of feeds your reader keep tracks of. This is done through subscription and usually by entering the feed’s URL into the feed reader.
